Match Report: v Bailieboro (Away) 13th Feb ‘16

In their ninth league match, Monaghan United U-12’s travelled away to Bailieboro Celtic, and after some fantastic football, Monaghan ran out 10-2 winners.  Monaghan got off to a good start even before the game had kicked off as Captain on the day Cian Bradley-Gillespie showed his leadership skills by taking the team warm-up himself and got the Monaghan players focused.  This proved vital as Monaghan started the game off on the front foot, and it didn’t take long before midfielder Dylan O’Reilly opened the scoring, with a long range left footed effort sailing into the top corner of the net. 1-0 to the away side.  The second goal for the away side came a few moments later as forward Cian Bradley-Gillspie played through his counterpart Jamie Cooney to neatly slide the ball past the Bailieboro keeper, making it 2-0 to Monaghan. Monaghan then struck once again as Jamie Cooney played the ball to midfielder Josh Kelly who calmly slotted past the home goalkeeper. Monaghan were taken a huge stronghold of the game with each player given his all going foward and defenders Ethan Ballentine, Robin Pratt-Clarke and Fionan O’Gallchoir cancelling out any efforts Bailieboro were throwing at them.  It wasn’t long before Monaghan added their fourth of the game as striker Jamie Cooney made the most of a poor goal kick, leaving himself one on one with the goalkeeper and finishing home his second goal of the game.  Monaghan kept pressing forward and forward in numbers and it didnt take long before Monaghan added their fifth of the game through midfielder Dylan O’Reilly who struck home with another one of his special long range efforts. 6-0 to Monaghan.  But Bailieboro kept their spirits high and after and well floated freekick, they sent the ball goalwards, but after a fine bottom corner save from goalkeeper Ciaran Doyle, the home sides striker struck the ball home.  Monaghan responded well with midfielders Josh Kelly, Patrick Treanor, Eoin O’Hanlon and Dylan O’Reilly playing a wonderful passing game.  It didn’t take long for this to prove vital as Josh Kelly was soon taken down for a free kick near the half way line. Midfielder Dylan O’Reilly stood up and struck the resulting free kick into the top left hand corner with a wonderful strike, his 8th goal of the season, all of which could be counted as goal of the season contenders. Monaghan kept the ball moving forward, and after midfielder Eoin O’Hanlon delivered a fantastic cross, Forward Blake Lees came in at the back post and sent the ball rocketing into the Bailieboro net. Monaghan once again pressed forward and minutes before half time forward Blake Lees was played through one on one with the bailieboro goalkeeper, from a fine ball from Patrick Treanor, and he sent home his fourth goal of the season.  9-1 the halftime scoreline.

Monaghan went close of tow occasions as Ethan Ballentine and Michael McMarrow both went close.  Midfielder Eoin O’Hanlon was showing how good of skill he has and he jinxed his way past three Bailieboro defenders and played the ball to striker Jamie Cooney to finish home, only for his effort to be correctly ruled out for offside.  The away side finished the game as they started it as Fionan O’Gallchoir showed his pace by beating two Bailieboro defenders and then floating a ball across the home sides box for striker Jamie Cooney to send home his fourth goal of the match, and 18th goal of the Season, as the game finished 10-2.

It was a fine performance from each member of the Monaghan team, but even though Jamie Cooney, Dylan O’Reilly and Blake Lees added some fantastic goals, our Man of the Match award goes to midfielder Josh Kelly with a fantastic all round performance in midfield.

In their eighth league match, Monaghan United U-12’s hosted a strong Carrick Rovers side in Gortekeegan, and after a one of their best performances of the season, Monaghan ran out 4-1 winners.  The weather had dried off and once again Gortekeegan pitch was in a fantastic condition for a great game of football.  The game started off at a very high pace with both teams battling it out for possession.  Carrick looked to the right side of the pitch for width to attack the Monaghan defence, but defenders Fionan O’Gallchoir and Robin Pratt-Clarke were putting in fine performances cancelling out the Carrick right winger time and time again.  Monaghan started to take a strong hold on the game but the first goal of the game came to the away side as Carrick broke on the counter attack and after a save from Monaghan goalkeeper Ciaran Doyle, a Carrick forward latched onto the rebound to fire home.  1-0.  But Monaghan responded very well to going behind and started to press forward with winger Eoin O’Hanlon and Michael McMarrow leading the attack, and it was long before Michael broke free one on one with the goalkeeper and after a fantastic dummy around the keeper, seen his left foot shot sail narrowly wide.  But this brought confidence to the home team as midfielders Patrick Treanor, Dylan O’Reilly, Cian Brennan and Josh Kelly started to dominate and move the ball forward.  The confidence kept growing in or the home side and just before half time the home side won a corner kick.  Midfielder Josh Kelly provided a wonderful cross and Patrick Treanor was on the receiving end as he headed past the Carrick goalkeeper.  1-1 at half time.

The second half started the same way the first half finished with Monaghan on the top and it didn’t take long before forward Blake Lees broke free on the counter attack from a through ball from Patrick Treanor and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper and put Monaghan into the lead. A fine finish making it 2-1 to the homeside.  Monaghan looked in fine form as midfielders Dylan O’Reilly and Josh Kelly drove forward and defenders Ethan Ballentine, Robin Pratt-Clarke and Fionan O’Gallchoir where equal to anything Carrick were firing at them. Monaghan pressed again on the counter and after some quick footwork Dylan O’Reilly played a through ball for forward Jamie Cooney who neatly finished passed the Carrick keeper and extending Monaghan’s lead to 3-1.  As the game went on and on Monaghans confidence grew as a long range effort from Robin Pratt-Clarke and a header from Ethan Ballentine nearly added a fourth.  The fourth came for the home side a few minutes from the end as midfielder Dylan O’Reilly once again fed the ball to striker Jamie Cooney who added Monaghans fourth of the game and his 14th goal of the season.  Just moments before the end of the game Monaghan pressed again and winger Cian Bradley-Gillespie stroke from wide only to see his effort sail narrowly over the bar.  It was a fine day for the home side as they ran out 4-1 winners against a very strong Carrick Rovers side, and it took one of the team performances of the season to do so.

After a fantastic performance from each Monaghan player it was our hardest week to select a player for Man of the Match, but this week it goes to Dylan O’Reilly who dictated the pace of the game on the left of a midfield trio.

Each player gave 110% and put in fantastic shifts as Monaghan dug in deep to come out on top, but it was defender Ethan Ballentine who picked up our Man of the Match vote, after a fine display in the right of the back three.
